Pulmonary Function Testing

The pulmonary function tests (PFTs) are non-invasive diagnostic tests to evaluate and quantify how well the respiratory system is functioning. They provide objective, standardized measurements of airflow, lung volumes, and gas exchange, which help clinicians diagnose, monitor, and manage lung diseases.

The Pulmonary Function Test measures:

  1. Airflow – how fast and how much air moves in and out.

  2. Lung volumes – the total amount of air the lungs can hold, including air that remains after exhalation.

  3. Gas exchange – efficiency of alveolar–capillary transfer.

The tests are offered to outpatients from many disciplines, and direct GP referrals.

The cost of the test is covered by your Health Insurance provider (VHI, Laya Healthcare, Irishlife etc)

What are the tests performed?

Spirometry

Quantitatively measures dynamic lung volumes and airflow rates.

Diffusion capacity

The rate at which a gas transfers from the alveolar air into the pulmonary capillary blood.

Lung volume studies

To quantify the static volumes of air contained within the lungs during different phases of the respiratory cycle

Reversibility testing

To determine whether airflow limitation improves significantly after administering a bronchodilator.

How to refer a patient?

The PFT services are based in the UPMC Kildare Hospital, Prosperous Road, Clane, Co. Kildare. The referral can be sent via:

Healthlink to UPMC Kildare Hospital

Email to pft@upmc.ie

What happens after the test?

After a pulmonary function test (PFT), the results of the test will be interpreted by a Consultant Respiratory Physician, and the final report will be sent to the referring physician.
